Not Promised Tomorrow?

A few months ago, a dear friend of mine made the following comment in a conversation, "We are not promised tomorrow." There have been many deaths in my life this year, both in my biological family and in my extended social circle.  The unexpected nature of some of that death motivated my friend to make this statement.  At first, I found this comment to have a poetic truth to it, and I even repeated it later in a conversation about the emotions present when dealing with the aftermath of my father's passing.
